Mobile Health Care

YMWS collaborated with Indian Oxygen between 1982 and 1996 to operate two mobile vans to serve the rural hinterland. The vans were designed as mobile clinics each managed by a medical team comprising a doctor, a nurse and a compounder. For 16 years, these mobile vans took health care to the mother and child in South Bengal. A few hundred thousands were benefitted. The then Chief Minister of West Bengal Sri Jyoti Basu inaugurated the project at Oxygen House.

Thus, what is now known as ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ was
experimented by us in Kolkata as early as 1982…

Youth Service Project

Our Youth Service Projects endeavour to inculcate leadership qualities among high school and college students. Over the years, more than 2000 young people from urban slums and rural communities have been exposed to leadership training skills, career counselling and cultural expositions.

The Annual Outward Bound Camps are a special attraction and participation in the State Republic Day Parade a matter of great national pride.

1000 young people in the age group 13 – 19 yrs, drawn from the weakest sections of society from 17 states in India and 4 Asian countries, were invited to Kolkata on 3 different occasions to showcase the power of youth and re-affirm their faith in human good.

Fact Finding

Young students with willing hands to work and warm hearts to love, have participated in area surveys, work camps and have also volunteered services at times of national disasters.

YMWS, in collaboration with Irish Aid and Femi, Holland, has
commissioned 148 Tube Wells in as many as 136 villages to provide clean drinking water to help prevent children from constantly falling ill due to water-borne diseases. Access to clean water and safe sanitation, therefore, correlate closely with other critical targets such as reducing child mortality and improving
gender equality and enrolment in education.

Meeting Point

Water is also a strong integrating component in rural Bengal. The tube-well sites in the villages are often a ‘meeting point’ where the women folk articulate their concerns and problems. In many instances poor landless women are heading the campaign for fresh water and community social reforms.
